We already have a handful of quad-camera phones and many more are on their way. but do we really need multiple rear or front cameras?

Why do we need four cameras on a phone?

Different brands implement multiple camera systems differently, but the basic idea is to make a camera system more versatile. Unlike DSLRs, you can clip different lens assembly to your phone for particular needs. So OEMs a You’d still be using the primary sensor for basic photography, but in select situations, the Telephoto lens for zoom or the Wide-angle camera for greater field of view might come in handy. Even when great camera phones like Google Pixel 3 XL defy the trend, we’d say that the concept of stacking multiple camera sensors has some merit to it. Having said that, like every tech trend, the term quad-camera is often abused. Manufacturers focus on increasing the count to 4 rather than on camera quality. In fact, most OEMs employ the fourth camera for depth mapping – something that can be conveniently accomplished using the other three sensors. So, just the term quad-camera shouldn’t weigh too heavy in your buying decision. On most affordable and mid-range phones, you’d only be using the primary camera most often.
